Team member of & # 39; Miracle on Ice & # 39 ;, Pavelich, was imprisoned for assault

A member of the "Miracle" Hockey Team, who won Olympic gold for Team USA in 1980, was arrested on Wednesday in northeastern Minnesota with a metal bar for an attack on his neighbor in the Lutsen region.

Mark Pavelich was sent to Cook County Prison on Thursday night and appeared on Monday in the District Court for second-degree and third-degree assault, possession of an illegal shotgun, and possession of a weapon with a missing serial number.

Pavelich, 61, a land developer in Lutsen, remains in detention instead of a $ 250,000 bail and was ordered by judge Michael Cuzzo to hold a hearing on his mental ability to stand trial. [1

Pavelich is scheduled to appear again on October 20 in court call from the victim because of the raid. James T. Miller, 63, said he was hit by Pavelich with a 3 to 4 foot metal stake after returning from a full day's fishing to the hockey star's home in a remote area some miles down a dirt road. Pavelich had accused the man to "spit his beer," it said in the lawsuit.

Miller was hospitalized "with tremendous pain" and suffered from two broken ribs, a kidney injury and a fracture on one of his vertebrae. Along with possible internal bleeding, the fees are detailed. The beating also left bruises on arms and legs and a large stain on his back.

Also after the indictments and other court records:

The deputies arrived in Pavelich's house and located in the yard the pole, similar to a tension rod with which Miller was beaten.

Inside, a shotgun was found under a bed upstairs and confiscated by a member of the US Forest Service. The butt of the weapon was gone and was replaced by a bent branch, so that the weapon was shorter than allowed by law. The serial number had been scraped off.

Pavelich was arrested at the entrance to his home. Miller returned to his house and was "in shock," it said.

Pavelich was a virtual hermit out of the ice since he and his followers portrayed David and stunned the world with their ice skates "miracle" victory over the game's Soviet-known Goliath. This semifinal victory at the Olympics drove Pavelich and the other Americans into the immortality of modern sport and the gold medal in Lake Placid.

Pavelich was responsible for the creative center of Eveleth High School and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. assisted Mike Eruzione's winner against the Soviets. The story of the team USA 2004 became the Hollywood hit "Miracle".

Pavelich soon joined the NHL, playing five seasons with the New York Rangers and scoring 99 goals in the first three seasons. He moved to the Minnesota North Stars in 1986-87, but only for 12 games.

After a short pro-stint in Italy in 1991, he had to leave the game at the San Jose Sharks -92. His time in the NHL included 355 games with 137 goals and 192 assists.

In 2012 Pavelich's 44-year-old wife Kara died in a fall from a balcony on the second floor of her house. Two years later, Pavelich sold his gold medal through an auction house in Dallas for $ 262,900. He explained that he had no financial difficulties and only wanted to provide financial security for his adult daughter.
