A measles outbreak is spreading in a Washington district known for not vaccinating its children, and health officials have declared a public health emergency.
A teenager from Ohio, who was never vaccinated as a child due to his parenting decisions, now chooses the preventive shot, now at age 18.
Ethan Lindenberger of Norwalk, Ohio, attacks Reddit user two months ago to ask if he could be vaccinated as an adult.
"My parents think vaccines are a kind of government program … I've never been vaccinated for anything, God knows how I'm still alive," he wrote. He asked, "Where do I go to get vaccinated, can I get vaccinated at my age?"
He told Good Morning America on Tuesday he has never received any vaccines for hepatitis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella or chickenpox.
"I saw that there were many people with different opinions, and when I examined these views, I came to the conclusion that they were good and useful," Lindenberger told GMA.
His mother, Jill Wheeler, who has other children who are not vaccinated, told the GMA she was "shocked" when she heard about her son's decision.
Lindenberger has since received vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza and HPV, according to the documents from The Washington Post.
