A new report lists the healthiest – and least healthy – states. She notes that Hawaii retook the title of the healthiest state in 2018 after falling to number 2 in 2017. Other exceptionally healthy states are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Utah. Tennessee is one of the least healthy states.
At the top of the list, Louisiana ranks 50th this year, replacing Mississippi as the state with the biggest health problems. The UnitedHealth Group has been published every year since 1990. To calculate the rankings, the researchers used 35 health measures in the categories of behavior, community and environment, politics, clinical care and health outcomes.

Among the factors that have helped Hawaii take the top spot are below-average obesity rates, smoking and frequent mental stress, low levels of air pollution, and a high number of primary care physicians.

Louisiana fared the worst, most notably due to its high proportion of children in poverty, smoking, obesity, frequent mental and physical strain, and many low birthweight babies They are in the northeast, some in the midwest and west. States classified as least healthy are located in the south except Indiana and Ohio.
