The state of Texas announced on Wednesday that it would not ask people who received overpayments from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) because of the agency’s mistake to repay them, which reverses the Commission’s previous stance.
The agency announced on Monday that it would request repayments from 46,000 people who were originally overpaid, even if the overpayments were not their fault.
The agency estimates that it overpaid applicants unemployment benefits by $ 32 million.
However, the commission withdrew later in the week and said it would no longer need the return.
“Texas is holding a court order to collect overpayments that are solely due to the Commission̵
The court order, which Gamez said he did not know before, came from the Texas Tribune in 1978.
According to Gamez, the Commission has no data on how many of the overpayments TWC was responsible for in 2020.
In 2019, TWC was responsible for 0.4 percent of improper payments based on an audit by the U.S. Department of Labor.
