The 2018 MacBook Pro with i9 processor is the fastest notebook Apple has ever built, but it could be better

The i9 MacBook Pro is a feat of technology and design that Apple has pursued for the last three models, but decisions made at the beginning of the line are still replicated today, mitigating what the computer might do ,

The latest MacBook Pro retains the fourth major body redesign that has seen the product line. The new design draws heavily on techniques used on the Retina MacBook, MacBook Air and iPad. The design is still 1

5.5mm thick and thus thinner than the MacBook Air.

Apple's high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro is still available in standard silver and a darker Space Gray finish and will be alongside sold a smaller 13-inch version – but this model is another test.

The Touch ID button is still a physical one and serves as an emergency path to force shutdown in the event of a nasty kernel panic, as well as a power-on button. Other performance features default to automatic, with the user opening or closing the lid to enable or disable the device.

Touch ID, however, is not universal. If you log out of your account, you must provide a password to log in again. Touch ID works only if your account is active. You also need to log in manually after switching it on and off as you would with iOS devices.

The touch bar is still supposed to appear and function as a dynamic strip of virtual keyboard keys, not constrained by the physical structure of mechanical keys. If you hold down the FN key, the touch bar is reset to a standard strip of 12 function keys and the Escape key.

When you start Windows, the touch bar is still reset to the virtual function keys display. But – you probably will not read about the touch bar anymore.

By the Numbers

The pinnacle of the 2017 MacBook Pro Refresh was the addition of Kaby Lake. The 2018 model has taken it a little further with Coffee Lake and DDR4 RAM in the 15-inch model.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro has two main configurations. We pretty much covered the i7 15-inch model on Saturday and it's a very solid machine. And that's probably the machine of choice for most people looking for a MacBook Pro.

For this review, we examine the 2.9 GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro with 512 GB of flash memory and 32 GB of RAM. The retail price for this configuration is $ 3499.

Keyboard, Again and Still

We've already talked extensively about the keyboard in both the 13-inch MacBook Pro test and the 15-inch i7 review. We will not go too deep here.

Yes, it is much quieter. Yes, there is a new silicone seal. No, we do not know yet if it will help with reliability – but we're pretty sure there were improvements on this keyboard 2017.

Testing the Silicon

The i9 CPU of our model has a basic clock rate of 2.9 GHz and a maximum boost clock of 4.8 GHz. Geekbench 4 is not the whole story, but the results for this i9 Macbook Pro are an impressive improvement over the top model in 2017.

The single-core performance was achieved on Geekbench's 5582 test, with the machine running 24,226 for multi-core. Core performance reached. This makes the machine the second-fastest processor Apple has ever developed for single-core burst performance, and the seventh multi-core processor behind the iMac Pro and two high-end Mac Pro configurations from 2013.

Geekbench Test Results A multitude of processor tasks, most of which do not drain your CPU, allowing the i9 to run at impressive clock speeds. For tasks like video editing, rendering tests are much more definite.

As we discussed after Apple's patch for the thermal throttling situation rolled out, the 2018 i9 15-inch MacBook Pro in the Cinebench R15 is 30 percent faster, reaching 1056, compared to the 2017 peak of 805. The i7 configuration By 2018 we investigated on Saturday gave a score of 991.

We have a number of video editing tests, starting with the Bruce X test in Final Cut Pro. This 5K render mainly uses the graphics and our top model 2018 MacBook Pro was only two seconds faster.

Next, we rendered a 5-minute 4K project with effects that tax the CPU and GPU more evenly, but do not exhaust them. Our top model 2018 was 9 percent faster. The order lasted 3 minutes and 29 seconds on the i7, versus 2 minus and 47 seconds on the i9.

With this step we wanted to see how this device runs under the most difficult loads, both of which exploit the graphics and CPU, with 4.5K RED RAW footage with effects. Our 5-minute project has grown 18 percent faster with our new i9 model.

Rendering took 14 minutes and 25 seconds to render on the 15-inch i7 MacBook Pro, compared to 12 minutes and 15 seconds on the i9 – about 18 percent faster.

By reinforcing previous tests, we have created another 5-minute 4K project with effects, but this time with HEVC material and export to HEVC. Apple needs this more efficient codec if you want to record 4K 60 or 1080P 240FPS.

The Apple Macbook 2017 even took 10 minutes to render the file, with the new i9 only taking 3 minutes and 51 seconds. This difference is not only due to the faster performance, but above all to the much more efficient HEVC encoding and decoding hardware in the Intel CPU of the 8th generation.

Concluded with Photoshop and Lightroom, the latest 15-inch Macbook only made about 4 percent faster conversions of 50 edited RAW photos into JPEG files, and there were no smoothing differences when using the programs.

True Tone Display

There is a lot to say about True Tone. In short, Apple's True Tone technology makes inputs from a pair of sensors on the screen and changes the settings of the internal display and compatible external ones to accommodate the lighting conditions in the room.

This is another feature that you already know, whether you like it or not. The opinions are shared among the video and picture editors about the utility of the function.

The feature is not bad, but not necessarily in all conditions and good for all users. Since you can turn it off at will, do not get stuck when you do not need it.

At this point, we're not sure if it's just a checkbox in a specification list or something more useful in the long term for most users. We will let you know in a few months.

The X in the GPU is nice, with variable enhancement

The Radeon Pro 555 and 560 ship in the 2017 model. The 2018 has "X" versions with slightly better performance and more video RAM.

As with previous models, macOS can automatically switch to the dedicated GPU when needed, using built-in graphics to save energy. In these cases, the integrated graphics cards are slightly faster than the previous-generation integrated chipset, but nothing special.

The OpenCL graphics test in Geekbench 4 has brought us an improvement from 42.990 to 52.499 in OpenCL with the added X. Metal was dramatically improved, reaching 60,149 with the 560X, compared to 38,701 with the 560 – but a sizeable portion of this gain is due to software enhancement.

RAM

The RAM was updated in the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro 16GB from 2133MHz LPDDR3 to 16GB from 2400MHZ DDR4 soldered on the motherboard. For an additional $ 400, you can get a total of 32 GB – which has this configuration as checked.

As we said earlier, you already know if you need it. If you do not know if you do that, you probably do not – but it's not a bad match if you want to keep the machine for four years or more.

Apple has switched to DDR4 RAM to get the 32GB option since it literally did not get there with LPDDR3 RAM. The recording is both faster than LPDDR3, as well as more power hungry. And it is also hotter, which further complicates an already close thermal situation.

Related to all that …

Thermics

The 15-inch i9 MacBook Pro is a hot machine. It's great, but that's not the hottest topic we're referring to. It's warm in every way, in a very small chassis.

As we said earlier, we think Apple was hijacked by Intel when they prepared for the MacBook Pro 2016 case in 2015. As we know in 2015, Intel has been promising for the delivery of 10nm process core chips by 2018.

Coffee Lake is still 14nm. Intel has not set delivery targets in seven years, it's not months or years apart.

The plus DDR4 RAM plus the 555X or 560X GPU paired with a thin design still results in a machine that's not quite what it could be because of the heat – although it's much better than before the patch of July 24th.

When the machine was under load, the metal surface of the keyboard routinely hit 107F for the GH and J keys. That is still usable, but it is very, very warm. That may not be bad in winter, but it's not so great in a Virginian summer.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro still has a lot of fussy details about the thermal environment. We're going to search a lot more in different work environments, including ambient temperature effects and machine orientations, as the weeks and months run out to see if they make a difference at all.

Flash speeds are bubbles

The ride is absolutely not listless. After running the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test after the machine had indexed for three days, we saw a write speed of 2790 megabytes per second.

Other places have claimed that this is due to APFS cloning, but after consulting BlackMagic we confirmed that this is not the case and the speeds are real.

Thunderbolt 3

There remains a lot of howling and gnashing of teeth over Thunderbolt 3 and through association of the USB C plugs. Two years later, users still complain about the cost of customization of dongles and Apple's lack of consideration of users when switching to the new connector.

In defense of the user, they are not entirely wrong, but the further we get from discharge, the complaints are less valid. USB c-to-whatever connections are cheap and plentiful. They can get there from here, and it is not expensive to do so.

In the defense of Apple, Thunderbolt 3 with the USB-C port is more future-proof and far faster than USB 3.0, and is a game changer for use cases if you help it and struggle less against it.

It is here, and it stays. It is high time to arrange and deal with it.

One solution that can keep costs down is a Thunderbolt dock. While Thunderbolt will retail 3 docks at $ 199, the $ 49 Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter will work well if you want to use an older dock with the newer devices, giving the prospect of a Thunderbolt 2 (or even original Thunderbolt) Dock makes cheaper than a bag full of adapters.

In addition, if you're considering an external GPU, many of the enclosures have both USB-A and Ethernet ports, in an accessory that does not cost much more than a dock. If you only need a few USB-A ports, you'll get a USB 3.0 dock and a USB C-to-USB cable for about $ 8. Problem solved

In terms of MagSafe we are testing very long USB-C at this point. On a melamine, corian, or finished wood surface, the force needed to pull out Apple's USB-C charging cable is about three quarters of what it takes to break a MagSafe 2 connection when the cable is less is drawn as 40 – degrees angle from the center to the horizontal plane and less than 30 degrees from the center to the vertical.

USB-C is not nearly as close to the 45W barrel connector Apple migrated from MagSafe.

And the AC adapter also has a USB-C port with the same separation force, so now two fast breakpoints in the event of an accident or unintentional dragging.

Apple's service numbers we've put together confirm this. The introduction of MagSafe in January 2006 halved the service calls for accidental damage until 2009. These figures have not been changed for MagSafe 2. However, in the two years since the release of the MacBook Pro, there has been no increase in the accident rate – and possibly a decline, but we'll wait another year to fully explain it.

With a 10-hour battery, we're not sure why you should knit a power cord along a transit route anyway. If you are so worried, buy a USB PD battery and keep it next to your computer.

If you are still not happy that MagSafe is gone, there are cheap options on Amazon.

USB-C is not the end of the world, but it's an adaptation for users. This adaptation is actually better done than fighting half-baked solutions.

The MacBook Pro is a Workhorse, but Not a Desktop

The MacBook Pro is not a replacement for iMac Pro in every way, but with an eGPU it comes pretty close. Everything depends on your personal workflow and use cases.

If you perform long rendering cycles or similar, the iMac Pro will work better for you. Aside from buying a large bag and delivering it to Starbucks or a remote location, the MacBook Pro is the way to go.

The i9 MacBook Pro is a solid machine that's faster than any other MacBook Pro ever made.

If most of your work is in bursts, like scrolling through HEIC files in photos, then this device is the best you can buy at Apple if you need a portable device. But it's not a universal key to all your computer problems, and there are arguments to save the $ 300 and instead get the Core i7 version, given the proximity of the benchmarks and the real test results for long processing jobs. [19659003] But here's the thing: Not everything is a long process. Even most editing tasks do not constantly pop up CPU and GPU. When deciding, it's important to consider your own workflow in terms of what you do most.

If you're coming from a MacBook Pro 2017 or earlier, the i9 is undoubtedly a good choice. However, the real performance of the i9 is not much higher than that of the i7 from 2018.

It's a lot of computer, with a lot of power, for a lot of money. There are cheaper machines with the i9 that work with the same thermal limitations and run Windows. So, another question is, how much is MacOS without compromise worth to you?

Is that an increase of five to ten percent over this year's i7 15-inch MacBook Pro worth $ 300 for what you do daily for the i9 upgrade, in addition to the $ 3000 plus for the computer? ? Of course we can not tell you that, and it depends on how much time you save on these five percent and how valuable that time is for you.

You can say you only want cheaper providers and you are right. But none of them brings MacOS on the table. The efforts to whip up Apple's operating system are intriguing, but they are not exactly legal, certainly not ethical, and everyone has compromises.

Get the right tool for the right job. The i9 MacBook Pro is the right tool for MacOS users – but it may not be for everyone, and that's fine.
