CLEVELAND, Ohio – Taylor Ceepo, 22, died this morning after collapsing with the Cleveland Marathon official. The University Hospital provides first aid for the marathon.
Stamatis said Ceepo had died on arrival at the hospital. He was unable to provide more information about the symptoms she had for reasons of patient privacy. It is still too early to determine the cause of death.
"We are very sad when we learn that the young woman collapsed this morning during the race," said Jack Staph, Executive Race Director, in a statement. "Our thoughts and compassion go to her family and friends at this time."
The race directors were not available for further comments on Sunday afternoon.
UH's health care providers treated about 60 to 70 people in the marathon, Stamatis said. There were a variety of complaints, including orthopedic problems, muscle sprains and dehydration.
Stamatis could not tell how many of these treatments are related to heat. The marathon was warmer this year than the average. In the late morning the temperatures were above the 80s. The normal temperature for the marathon is 70 degrees.
