A 22-year-old Cleveland Marathon participant died Sunday after collapsing just before the finish line. The cause of death for runner Taylor Ceepo was not immediately known.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Ceepo was a quarter of a mile from the finish line when it collapsed around noon. The temperatures in Cleveland were on Sunday in the 80s.
A spokesman for the hospital where Ceepo was taken informed Cleveland.com that she died when she arrived. He said he could not reveal any symptoms she showed. Ceepo recently graduated from Walsh University, about an hour's drive south of Cleveland in Canton, Ohio, where she played in the football team.
"It is my sad duty to let you know that a beloved member of our Walsh family, Ms. Taylor Ceepo, has collapsed and died running the Cleveland Marathon today," said Amy Malaska, vice president of student affairs, in a statement. ". , , Her mother, dear friends and her friend (also a Walsh student) were with her. Our love and deepest compassion goes out to her family and relatives. "
Walsh, a Catholic university, organized a mass on Sunday evening and invited students, faculty and staff to come and mourn.
"Your Walsh family will keep you in prayer," Malaska said in her statement.
