Joel Embiid meets a handful of topics, including his status as one of the best Twitter users in the NBA.
USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid sustained a broken orbital bone of his left eye that needs surgery in the next few days announced on Thursday night .

On top of the orbital injury, Embiid also suffered a concussion and was included in the NBA concussion protocol.

The team provided no further information as to when Embiid might be back.

The Sixers are 42-21, embiid starts. With Embiid on the court, the Sixers score 111.4 points and allow 99.7 points per 100 possessions, and with Embiid out of the game, the Sixers score 101.8 points and allow 105.7 points per 100 possessions. The Sixers go from a plus 11.6 network with Embiid to a minus 3.9 without him over.

Embiid is an important differentiator and an integral part of Philadelphia's success.

Timelines to return from orbital fracture vary. If an operation is required, at least five games and a maximum of 28 games will be missed, according to certified athletic trainer Jeff Stotts, who maintains a database of player injuries at www.instationclothes.com.

Embiid was first examined on Wednesday evening in the locker room, where he passed the NBA "Locker Room Concussion Assessment Tool".

Embiid later experienced concussion.

He injured the New York Knicks early in the second quarter when his head collided with rookie Markelle Fultz on a dribble handover.

At 44-30, the 76ers sit in No. 4 of the Eastern Conference, a half game on the Indiana Pacers. The playoffs begin on April 14 and the 76ers would miss Embiids production painfully if he missed the time.
