The car chess wars have begun.
Triggered by the surprise success of the Dota-Auto-Chess mod, created by the Chinese team Drodo Studio, some well-known publishers and developers have quickly reversed their own efforts. and they are the proof of great success in the beginning.
Auto-chess games are "Auto-Battler", which means they are turn-based multiplayer strategy games where you send units to a board divided into squares. The fight is automatic. The genre has more to offer, of course, but that's just it.
Riot Games, maker of MOBA League of Legends, made a strong leap forward with the release of Teamfight Tactics, a world auto-chess game.
Teamfight Tactics proved to be extremely popular right from the start and is already one of the most popular games on Twitch. At the time of publication of this article, Teamfight Tactics has more viewers than Fortnite and suitably League of Legends.
Drodo Studio, which makes a stand-alone version of Dota Auto Chess without the Dota elements sold exclusively in the Epic Games store, has already launched a flanking attack with the release of Auto Chess on Mobile.
And now Valve has entered the fight with Dota Underlords – and off to a flyer. At the time of writing this article, it was the fourth most popular game on Steam before Rainbow Six: Siege and Grand Theft Auto 5 with an impressive 185,000 concurrent players. Dota Underlords has already surpassed the popularity of the unfortunate artifact and appears to be the next major Valve game .
There is also a life cycle for underlords, which I find very delicious. Here we have a Valve-made game (Dota Underlords) based on a Mod (Dota Auto Chess) for a Valve-made game (Dota 2), which is itself based on a Mod (Defense of the Ancients). Video games!
So we have Valve, Epic and Riot in the early stages of the automatic chess war. But who else could get into the fight? I'm assuming that any big game company with a universe of recognizable heroes could get on the mark. Blizzard with his army of hero factions like Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and Overwatch seems to be an obvious candidate. Could Epic try with his various Fortnite characters? And what about the console players Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony?
It is still early, and the automatic chess wars have just begun.
