The body of a baby found in a cooler on the side of a street in Troup County could have been there for several days, the authorities said Monday.
The body was discovered on Sunday afternoon after someone saw a cooler near a forest line on Boy Scout Road on New Franklin Road, about 65 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta. Witnesses told the authorities that the cooler with zipper and watermelon print sat there for up to a week.
Troup County sheriff's deputies were called at around 3:20 pm.
"Once on the ground, MPs and investigators discovered what looked like a deceased newborn in a portable cooler bag," Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Stewart Smith said in a press release.
The baby has not been identified. The GBI was due to perform an autopsy on Tuesday, which could give the investigators clues to the death of the child.
