On Saturday night, as a society, we reached new heights of dumbness in the category of old white men complaining about the state of baseball today. The Braves Broadcasters Chip Caray (grandson of Harry Caray) and Joe Simpson took a few minutes during the Braves Dodgers game to complain about how the Dodgers were dressed during the batting practice.
Simpson and Caray have not only talked about intercepted ways. They had their production team take pictures of the Dodgers during BP to make their point that the Dodgers wore disrespectful t-shirts and no socks during stroke exercises . Your reasons? They looked sloppy, and the Dodgers fans who came to the stadium to see BP had no idea who the players were, since they wore no uniform. Joe Simpson's voice dripped with contempt when he said that the Dodgers organization should be ashamed, and he could not believe that the Major League Baseball allowed teams to wear this type of clothing when the gates were open. Heaven forbids anyone to be loose and normal for a second! * clutches pearls *
The amount of pointless, unnecessary worry trolling in this 88-second clip is, frankly, pretty impressive. And to top it off, Simpson said after seeing Chase Utley wearing BP in a T-shirt and no socks, he felt it was an embarrassment, implying that he no longer respected Utley. Yes, Joe Simpson considers Chase Utley unprofessional. But not only Utley, he clearly thinks that all Dodgers are unprofessional because they have dressed up something comfortable during their work . Not even a game. WORK OUT. And Simpson has done everything to make it, and spent nearly two minutes beating the opposing team because he did not live up to his standards and pretty much said that baseball behavior is not right.
It's pretty clear guys like Simpson are wrong with baseball. Not just because he was concentrating on something completely insignificant in order to face up to today's game and act like a worried parent attempting to rally baseball in unruly teenager in 201
Baseball has a youth problem. MLB desperately wants to win young fans, but allowing regional sports networks to continue engaging old white men who seem to hate today's game only drives them off. If people like Joe Simpson have no good things to say about the game and decide to criticize players for making them feel comfortable during PRACTICE, it will not help anyone.
Well, maybe that's not true. The Dodgers responded the way they should: making fun of Simpson. Enrique Hernandez, who was in the fast lane to become one of the great figures of baseball (if he has not already), suggested the Dodgers wear bikini underwear during BP and the name of each player is printed on the butt.
Justin Turner found that buddy was probably the right choice. And the shirt that Chase Utley wore? It was a KCancer T-shirt, for Jason Motte's foundation to fight cancer, and a bunch of them were sold since Simpson had opened his pie hole.
Allen Iverson said it best: We do not talk about a game We talk about exercise. Apparently, Joe Simpson does not know the difference.
