Yarmuth spoke just hours after Trump declared that the ultimate goal of the United States was to never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The President signed a decree in the Oval Office to deny access to financial instruments to Tehran's top leaders and other senior officials.

"We are not looking for a conflict with Iran or any other country," said Trump. "I'm looking forward to discussing with someone who wants to say something – in the meantime, who knows what's going to happen – all I can say is that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."

Trump later added that the sanctions would have been imposed even if Iran had not shot down any of the American drones.
