DJI today launches the latest entry in its range of stabilization gimbals for smartphones: the DJI Osmo Mobile 3. As with Previous iterations In the Osmo Mobile series, you snap your smartphone into the gimbal and use Bluetooth to get crisp and stable video footage.
The Osmo Mobile 3, however, offers a clear advantage over previous DJI gimbals and most competing products: the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 folds and is therefore incredibly portable.
One of the biggest annoyances of gimbal smartphones is their size. Sure, you can make them flat so they take up less space, but they still take up much more space in a backpack than most travelers would like.
When you fold the Osmo Mobile 3, it takes less backpack space than just about any other gimbal, which is great news. Although it is not available in pocket size, it can now easily fit in a shoulder bag or a belt pouch.
Another notable upgrade of the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 over the previous two Osmo gimbals is the introduction of USB-C charging. This not only speeds up the charging process (DJI indicates that charging will be fully charged from zero to full in about two hours), but also means that your smartphone charger will also charge your gimbal. That's one less cable you need to stash in your bag!
Apart from these two important improvements, there are some other features of DJI Osmo Mobile 3 that may interest you. You now have the option to automatically switch your phone from portrait to landscape mode (for example, you had to manually do this on previous Osmo Mobile devices). In addition, the back shutter button is back (the Osmo Mobile 2 has abandoned this feature for some reason), and the supported devices now have the active track and story mode we both first saw on the DJI Osmo Pocket Osmo Pocket, This device is still the best friend of the traveler when it comes to video stabilization, since it is literally in pocket size. However, the Osmo Pocket is almost three times as expensive as the Osmo Mobile 3, which is available from $ 119 for gimbals, wrist straps, storage bags and anti-slip pads. If you want to get the complete package that comes with an extra carry case and tripod, it costs $ 139. For reference, the Osmo Pocket for the gimbal starts alone at $ 349.
