THE HAGUE, Netherlands ̵

1; Dutch motivational speaker Emile Ratelband may feel like a 49-year-old, but under Dutch law, he is still 69 years old old.

A Dutch court on Monday refused Ratelband's request to turn 20 in a case that caught the world's attention.

"Mr. Ratelband has the freedom to feel 20 years younger than his real age and act accordingly." The Arnhem Court said in a press release. "However, changing his date of birth would result in the loss of 20 years of records from births, deaths, marriages and registered partnerships, which would have a number of undesirable legal and social consequences."

The Dutch motivational speaker Emile Ratelband in The Center of Arnhem, The Netherlands, on November 5, 2018. Ratelband went to court last month, arguing he did not feel 69 and He said that his request was in line with other forms of personal transformation that are gaining acceptance in the Netherlands and around the world, such as the ability to change the name or gender.

In a written ruling, however, the court said that the Dutch law allowed rights and obligations based on age "If the request were made by Mr. Ratelband, those age requirements would be meaningless."

The court said it I have recognized "a trend in society" where people feel fit and powerful. I have been here for some time, but did not consider this a valid argument for changing a person's date of birth.

Ratelband could not convince the court that he was suffering from age discrimination, adding that "there are other alternatives to questioning age discrimination rather than changing a person's date of birth." [19659015]
