Take three minutes to see astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Brian May tell about the planned European Space Agency (Hera) mission planned for 2026. The larger asteroid is called Didymos. This system is typical of the thousands who pose a threat to our planet, and even the smaller of the two small asteroids ̵

1; the asteroid moon – would be large enough to destroy an entire city if it collided with Earth.

In 2022, NASA will crash its DART spacecraft against the smaller asteroid of the Didymos system, known as the Didymoon. A few years later, Hera will map the resulting impact crater and measure the mass of the asteroid. Hera will have two CubeSats on board, who will be able to approach the surface of the asteroid and conduct important scientific studies before setting up.

The Hera mission will be presented in November at an ESA meeting where European Space Ministers make a final decision on the mission's flight.

Didymos is a binary asteroid. The primary body (right) has a diameter of about 780 meters. The Didymoon secondary body (left) has a diameter of about 160 meters and turns in about 12 hours at a distance of about 1.2 km around the primary body. Picture about the ESA.
