The free Disney + pilot starts in the Netherlands

I've just spent the last few minutes subscribing to Disney + and downloading apps for iOS, Android and Apple TV. Then I spent a few more minutes with streaming titles like Avengers Infinity War Star Wars The Last Jedi Incredibles 2 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Free Solo . No, I'm not an excellent general fighting on the front lines of the streaming wars. I'm just a guy who happens to live in the Netherlands, where the Disney + service went live. It's a free pilot that runs until the 12th of November. After that it costs 6.99 € / month.

I have to agree with my colleague Julia Alexander, who described the Disney + experience as "empty but elegant". Compared to Netflix, there is little content here. Compared to Apple TV +, however, there is a lot and it is very easy to find. With a selection on the top line, you can quickly jump to Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, or National Geographic titles. These inviting boxes are located just below a full-width carousel and show the most popular hits from each section. More than once, I thought, " Oh, right, this is a Disney movie" as I scroll through hundreds of titles.

Earlier it was reported that only four Marvel films would be available for launch on November 12: Captain Marvel Thor: The Dark World Iron Man and Iron Man 3; with Avengers: Endgame available later in December. The Dutch pilot has 18 Marvel titles – possibly due to different licensing agreements – but is currently missing Endgame and Captain Marvel :

  • Avengers
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron [19659008] Avengers: Infinity War
  • Iron Man
  • Iron Man 2
  • Guardian of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2
  • Black Panther
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Thor
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Thor: Rangnarok
  • Ant-Man
  • Ant- Man and the Wasp
  • Doctor Strange

The pilot also has the entire Star Wars franchise available for streaming, from Episode I to VIII, including Star Wars series, and Lego Shorts. Unfortunately, there is still no sign of the Mandalorian .

The Disney + home page conveniently sorts content for all Disney + sections into a number of useful categories such as hit movies, Out of the Vault classics, musicals, and documentaries.

There are 17 titles in a 4K Ultra HD and HDR section, including some from the saga Avenger and Star Wars . Unfortunately, the search function of Disney + does not work for terms such as "4K" or "HDR" or "Ultra HD". Even the titles listed in the "4K Ultra HD and HDR" section do not identify themselves as 4K when you click in their pages. Here is the complete list that is currently available:

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Black Panther
  • Captain America: The Winter Solider [19659034] Captain America: Civil War
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Free Solo
  • Aladdin
  • Ralph breaks the Internet
  • Mary Poppins returns [19659044] A Wrinkle in Time
  • Christopher Robin
  • The Prince Diaries
  • The Prince Diaries 2
  • The Nutcracker and the Four Empires

Of course, you can skip all curated lists and pages and jump directly to the search by title or characters to search or genre. You can also click through a collection of Disney collections or search any movie or series on the search screen.

Some Other Observations:

  • I was able to create a maximum of seven viewer profiles.
  • Profiles can be assigned to Kids status to limit content to less frightening content.
  • AirPlay works from my iPhone to Apple TV.
  • Chromecast works on my Android device.
  • Downloading movies to my phones for offline playback works as expected.
  • Disney + can also be accessed through a web browser. Safari and Chrome were fine on my MacBook.
  • The Disney + interface looks good on Apple TV as you would expect from its clean layout. I would expect the same from Roku.
  • I was able to watch a movie on the Apple TV and then switch to both my Android device and the iPhone, where the same movie was queued and played back at the same time stamp. However, such a transfer to the web browser does not exist.
  • At one point, five Disney + streams – three devices, two web browsers – ran simultaneously, even though the limit was set to four. Two were in browsers, but so shrugging emoji.
  • For every Disney Princess movie I can think of, there's a section with Prince and Fairy Tales, from classics like Cinderella to modern settings like Moana . My daughter will love it.

For a pilot, the entire experience was flawless. No craziness in apps, no unexpected caching, no impact on Disney's streaming service's otherwise strong first appearance.

Of course, my impressions come from a pilot who was traveling in a small country – let's see what happens on November 12th.
