Kunai | PC, switch | TurtleBlaze | Release: TBD
Numerous games over the years have put players in the role of a ninja, but Kunai from TurtleBlaze is a little different. Instead of acting as a typical Japanese assassin, you're in control of Tabby, a tablet with the soul of an ancient ninja. It's a strange premise, but the game hugs it with all your heart and makes for a charming, fast-paced Metroidvania adventure.
Kunai plays the largest part of humanity in an abandoned, post-apocalyptic world where an army of evil robots has been wiped out. In true metroid fashion, you must explore the vast landscape by using the skills you gradually learn to navigate the environment and defeat enemies. The first one you find is your katana, but that just grazes the surface of your arsenal. As you travel deeper into the world, acquire other weapons such as machine guns and add new ninja tricks to your repertoire, such as a stroke that lets you jump through thin walls.
However, their most versatile tools are the Titular Kunai. You will pick up a few of them early on, but instead of using them to disperse enemies, they are more likely to struggle with hooks. Throw the kunai on walls and you can swing over chasms and climb 90 degree surfaces. You can throw slingshots on vertical waves both simultaneously and yourself. Kunai is still a long way to go, but between his acrobatic action and the charming visuals, it's a game to keep an eye on.
