Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) Drew a sharp response from New York's Congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Monday after pointing out the Democrat promoted as "this girl" in a campaign speech.
DeSantis, who lines up for him Florida governor, made the remarks at a weekend event. The video of the speech appeared on Monday and was highlighted by the Huffington Post and other news agencies.
"You look at this girl, Ocasio-Cortez or whatever she is, I mean, she's in a completely different universe," DeSantis said in the speech. "It's basically a socialism that is in ignorance, and it's problematic."
He aimed at a PBS "Firing Line" interview in which the 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez criticized Israel's "Occupation of Palestine." and then noted: "I'm not the geography expert, politics on this issue."
Extracts from the exchange, as well as from several Ocasio-Cortez election campaigns, have been published frequently on Fox News Channel in recent weeks as the Republicans tried to occupy the self-described democratic socialist as the new face of the Democratic Party.
"You are just repeating these conserved, left-wing topics of conversation, and you are somehow the savior of the Democratic Party? Good God!" Said De Santis, adding, "She has no idea what she's talking about."
Ocasio -Cortez fired on Monday afternoon in a tweet referring to her Puerto Rican heritage and tens of thousands of people who left Florida for Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
"Rep DeSantis, it seems you are confused, whatever I am" Ocasio-Cortez said . "I'm a Puerto Rican woman, it's strange that you do not know what that is, considering that ~ 75,000 Puerto Rican people have moved to María in the 10 months to Florida, but I'm sure these new FL- Voters Appreciate Your Comments! "
Ocasio-Cortez became a progressive cause-celebre after their surprise first win over longtime MP Joe Crowley in the 14th district of New York last month. She set out with Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) last week to fight for Liberal candidates in Kansas – although she has also upset some moderate Democrats who have criticized her willingness to side with the party establishment to take over. DeSantis, who recently received support from President Trump, returned to Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter on Twitter.
"My problem is not your identity but your socialist views," he said in a message. My problem is not your identity, but your socialist views.
Socialism does not work, Israel does not occupy "Palestine", borders are important and the unemployment rate has dropped because of good policies, not because people "work two jobs". Https://t.co/QwkqCibLLR
