EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – A New Day, a New Quarterback Loss for the New York Jets.
Starting from Sam Darnold, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis last week, Trevor Siemian suffered a potentially serious left knee injury in the 23-3 defeat of Jets against the Cleveland Browns on Monday at the MetLife stadium.
Siemian is spotted in the locker room with crutches and a hiking boot on Tuesday and subjected to an MRI scan to determine the extent of the damage. He was injured in the second quarter when his left leg bent awkwardly after a late strike by Browns defender Myles Garrett.
Jets coach Adam Gases declined to comment on the severity of the injury.
Siemian was replaced by a third place winner. Striker Luke Falk, who was signed off by the jets' training team earlier in the day. Falk, who spent the preseason with the Jets, finished the 20-of-25 passes for 1
"It's a familiar area for me," said Gase, who has launched six quarterbacks since 2016 – four with the Miami Dolphins and two with the jets.
It's likely to be seven, as Falk is likely to start against the New England Patriots on Sunday (2: 0).
"I do not feel like thinking about it right this minute," said Gase about the matchup in New England.
Only five teams in the Super Bowl era (with the exception of the 1987 strike season) had to go into their first Three games have three quarterbacks in place, with the last two teams scoring a 3-31 record and the last three playing all the playoffs.
The Jets are likely to sign a replacement quarterback for the game as Darnold will be out Jets have not said when they expect to return, and the second-year quarterback is hoping to play week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles, with the Jets seeing them again in week 4.
If Falk had been injured in the match "The jets would have returned Le Veve Bell as their emergency quarterback."
Siemian's injury looked evil, but he managed to get up and leave the field, hobbling into the umbel idekabine and was officially excluded in the third quarter.
The Jets (0-2) attempted to gather after the bomb from Darnold to Siemian, but the offense stuttered beneath him and started with three punches of play. He was injured in the fourth series.
For the first time since 2017, Siemian (3 to 6, 3 meters) was rusty from the start. He was fired twice and kept the ball too long in other games. In a third-and-15 from the jets' 32-yard line, he was rinsed out of the bag and hurled a deep pass to the close end of Ryan Griffin. Garrett arrived a split second too late – he was punished – and landed on Siemian, who was apparently in great pain.
It was a terrible day for the offensive that only crossed midfield twice in the first three quarters. In two games, Gases offense has produced 11 points.
"When we look at it, we have to look at all our boys and see who does their job and who does not," said Gase. "If not, we'll need to swap some parts."
Falk (20-for-25, 198 yards) has done a decent job under the circumstances. He got work in the field, behind Siemian, but he had no chance to work with the starters until Monday night. They started it slowly – five games in a row – and gradually opened the offensive.
"Luke is very confident," said Gase. "When we came out of this first series, we realized he was calm, it was like we were training."
The Jets relied on Bell, who had 10 catches for 61 yards and 21 kicks for 68 yards. He also had a hissing low in the Cleveland area.
After that, Bell was visibly frustrated, but blamed the shift away from the quarterback.
"It was not the quarterback game, it's just people who deal with details," he said. "We had many discarded passports, many false starts, people who did not make enough games, including me."
When Falk launches on Sunday, this will be the 199th election in the 2018 draft (from Tennessee Titans) against the 199th election in the 2000 draft. Falk and Tom Brady are the only two quarterbacks in the past 20 years, who were elected as 199.
Falk called Brady a "source of inspiration" and found that he was following Brady's legendary diet – but not as strict as Brady.
] "No, I'm 24," he said, "so I eat pizza from time to time."
Wider receiver Demaryius Thomas (thigh) and linebacker Jordan Jenkins (calf), both of whom are also injured, will have MRT on Tuesday.
