The judge will not throw the Manafort case due to leak allegations

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – A federal judge in Virginia said Friday he would not dismiss bank fraud and tax evasion charges against President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman on allegations of leakages to the press.

Paul Manafort solicitors – whose lawsuit is due to begin in late July – said they may ask his trial to be moved to another US District Judge TS Ellis III made it clear he would not throw the case away.

The efforts of Manafort's lawyers come after a series of setbacks in their attempts to file a lawsuit against him, which was thrown out by two different judges.

Manafort is accused of hiding Virginia with tens of millions of dollars from the IRS, which he deserves, advising pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. He is also being tried in Washington and has been remanded.

Manafort's lawyers had asked the judge to produce a press release saying they could have a jury against him. But Ellis said he was not inclined.

Nonetheless, Friday's media contacts came when FBI Special Agent Jeff Pfeiffer testified that Justice Department officials met with reporters for The Associated Press in April 201

In a statement, AP spokeswoman Lauren Easton told AP journalists "met with representatives of the Justice Department in an effort to obtain information about reports they reported, as the reporters do." During the meeting, they asked representatives of the DOJ for a Paul Manafort storage cabinet, without naming its name or location. "

The meeting took place about a month before the appointment of Special Counselor Robert Mueller, who discussed the links between Trump's electoral campaign and Russia during the 2016 elections and possible blockades of justice investigated by Trump

This investigation has led to the criminal prosecution of Manafort for several financial charges and allegations that he acted as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukrainian interests.

It is unclear whether the meeting to which Pfeiffer referred The first time the officials of the Ministry of Justice learned about the camp unit. During his testimony, Pfeiffer said that he had learned of the unit either through his investigation efforts or through a meeting with the AP.

The agent testified that he had taken the meeting with the reporters, expecting to receive information Ministry of Justice officials "refused" to answer the questions or comments of the reporters.

Following a briefing by Manafort lawyer Thomas Zehnle, Pfeiffer was questioned about the notes of the officials in the room and handed over by the special counseling center for the defense of Manafort on Friday

According to the parts of the records read in court, an official said that the AP reporters asked if they were "out of the base" in their coverage. One official replied that the reporters "seemed to understand Manafort's business relationships well."

When asked who was in the room, Pfeiffer said he did not remember the names of the reporters, but the names of the FBI agents and the Justice Department officials, including Andrew Weissman, who was then head of the Department of Justice's fraud department. Weissmann later joined Mueller & # 39; s team and is one of the leading lawyers prosecuting Manafort.
