Serena Williams has won the first match of her return to the US Open
The No. 17 seed beat Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0 in the opening game of the Arthur Ashe Stadium
Williams missed last year's US Open and gave birth to her daughter during the tournament.
She was able to play in the third round the older sister Venus, the seed No. 16
No. 28 Seed Denis Shapovalov moved into the second round when his good friend and opponent, Felix Auger-Aliassime, stopped playing in the game between two Canadian teens because he did not feel well.
Shapovalov performed 7-5, 5-7, 4-1 when Auger-Aliassime retired. Auger Aliassime was visited by a doctor on the third set and said his heart was racing.
Shapovalov is 19 and thus the youngest player in the ATP Top 100.
Auger-Aliassime has just turned 18 on August 8 and made him the youngest player in the ATP Top-200.
Their combined age made this the most recent US Open Men's Match since 2006, when Novak Djokovic, 19, beat Donald Young, 17.

Venus Williams moved to the second round, beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a match of the last US Open Champions.
Williams, the # 16 seed and a semi-finalist in Flushing Meadows last year, was able to play younger sister Serena in the third round. That would be her earliest grand slam match in 20 years.
Venus Williams won the 2000 and 01 US Open Championships, but fought in the majors this year and dropped in the opening round of the Australian Open and French Open. She reached the third round at Wimbledon, which she has won five times.
Kuznetsova won the US Open in 2004 and received a wild card for this year's tournament. She also won the 2009 French Open.
Defender Sloane Stephens is in the second round of the US Open.
Stephens, the No. 3 seed, defeats Evgeniya Rodina from Russia 6-1, 7-5 at the rebuilt Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Stephens won her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows last year when she beat compatriot Madison Keys in the final.
Vacant when she won last year's event Stephens also reached the finals of this year's French Open and lost to the leader Simona Halep.
Andy Murray was a winner in his return to Grand Slam Tennis, beating James Duckworth 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in the first Round of the US Open.
The 2012 US Open Champion from the UK has been eating much of last year for hip surgery. He had not appeared in a major since Wimbledon in 2017.
Murray is only 5: 3 this season. Former # 1 player is currently # 382 in the world and uses a secured ranking to enter the tournament. Murray, who said he does not think it would be realistic to win the title, could play US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the third round in 2009.
Kyle Edmund and Roberto Bautista Agut were upset with the US Open and eliminated three sown men on the first day of action.
Edmund, the seed No. 16 from Great Britain, was ousted by Paolo Lorenzi of Italy (4-6, 6) -4, 7-5, 6-1 for a disappointing end to the Grand Slam season after a strong Begin. He made his deepest run in a major when he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January.
The No. 19 seed, Bautista Agut was swept by Australian Jason Kubler, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. The Spaniard has dealt with injuries in the half of the season.
No. 8 Gregor Dimitrov was the highest-ranking man to lose and fell to Stan Wawrinka.
Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open Champion, has won his return to the tournament with a 6 3, 6-2, 7-5 win over Grigor Dimitrov, No. 8  Wawrinka also supplanted the Bulgarian in the first round at Wimbledon
Wawrinka failed to defend his US Open title last year, forced to miss the tournament after two operations on his left knee. The three-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland fell so low that he needed a wildcard to create the US Open field.
He easily won the first two sets and collected after an early treatment on the legs in the set.
Jack Sock is finally back in the single win column.
The number 18 American has singled out a series of seven defeats in 6-0, 7-6 (4), 6-2 against Argentina's Guido Andreozzi in the opening round of the US Open.
It was Socks first win in singles since defeating David Ferrer in May in Rome. He is only 6-15 this year after the end of 2017 with a career-best ranking of # 8.
It was a much better year in the doubles, where Sock is 26-10 with four titles, including the Wimbledon Championship with partner Mike Bryan.
Simona Halep is the first woman to finish first, having lost in the first round of the US Open in the professional age.
Halep defeated 6 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia was rewarded with a gap of -2.6-4 in 44th place on Monday in an extremely badly beaten game with a total time of 76 minutes.
It was the first game in the converted Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Halep won the French Open in June for her first Grand Slam title.
But it's the second year in a row that she's leaving the US Open in the first round.
Top Placed Simona Halep has another slow start in a Grand Slam tournament. She can only hope that it will be as good at the US Open as at the French Open.
In the first match at the remodeled Louis Armstrong Stadium, Halep lost their opening round to the 44th. Kaia Kanepi from Estonia 6 -2 in 28 minutes
At the end of May, Halep opened the opening set of her first round match against 83rd-placed Alison at Roland Garros Riske with the same result before she came back to win the game 2-6, 6 -1, 6-1, before finally claiming her first major championship.
Halep lost to Master Maria Sharapova in the first round of the last US Open until 2006.
A long list of returns highlights Day 1 at the US Open as the last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year begins.
Schedule Monday includes Serena Williams, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka – all past champions in Flushing Meadows who missed last year's US Open] In addition, defending champions Rafael Nadal and Sloane Ste are scheduled to play.
Williams will face Magda Linette at Arthur Ashe Stadium to start the night, followed by Nadal against David Ferrer in a rematch of the 2013 French Open Final.
No. Simona Halep plays 1-1 against Kaia Kanepi in the first game ever played at the converted Louis Armstrong Stadium. The stadium now has a retractable roof.
