The Meters & Neville Brothers keyboardist Art Neville 1937

Famous Keyboarder Art Neville died at the age of 81. The co-founding member of The Meters and the Neville Brothers had withstood years of declining health that led to his death on Monday, a family source NOLA confirmed .com.

"It was peaceful," said Kent Sorrell, Neville's longtime manager to Keith Spera of NOLA.com. "He died at his side with his revered wife Lorraine at his side." The news of the death of "Poppa Funk" comes seven months after he announced his retirement after an illustrious 65-year career.

Born Arthur Lanon Neville on December 17, 1937 in New Orleans, the acclaimed keyboarder began playing the piano as a teenager and performed shortly after learning the instrument with his musical family. His influences included Professor Longhair, Booker T. Jones and James Booker. The first foretaste of the success of Art was the only 1

7 -year-old, as his lead vocals on the "Mardi Gras Mambo" the Hawkettes helped make his high school band a hit. A stay in the US Navy lasted from 1958 until 1962, he returned to both the music and his hometown and soon after the Neville Sounds with the brothers Aaron Neville and Cyril Neville and friends George Porter, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste founded.

The group eventually became known as The Meters and with a core cast of Art Neville, George Porter Jr., Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste, the band helped the pioneers of funk music. The Meters both functioned as a backing band for artists like Dr. Ing. John, Robert Palmer and dr. John and recorded between 1969 and 1977 eight own albums. "Cissy Strut", "Fire On The Bayou", "Hey Pocky" A-Way and Funky Miracle are among the most popular songs by The Meters.

In 1978, Art founded the Neville Brothers with Cyril, Aaron and Charles Neville. The Neville Brothers toured with some of the best live acts of all time, including The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and Santana. Yellow Moon Neville's 1989 album was the group's biggest critical success. Art Neville joined the members of The Meters in various incarnations. The most durable group were the funky METERS.

The original cast of The Meters brought together a handful of shows in the 2010s, including making an appearance on board Jam Cruise 15 in 2017 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. "Poppa Funk" had no public appearance since 2017 and is said to have been in poor health. Art did not attend a ceremony or concert in 2018 where the Meters received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.
