Southern California Gas crews were at home to repair a gas pipeline that was reportedly damaged by a contractor working at the house. The explosion occurred about an hour after the crew arrived and the fire department was already on site.
Death was confirmed as an employee of SoCalGas. The 15 injured are treated.
"We are deeply saddened by today's incident of one of our employees being killed, one firefighter injured and others harmed," a statement by SoCalGas said. "We now focus on working with first responders to ensure the safety of the area and support all stakeholders, and we will continue to work with first responders to determine what caused the accident, and our sympathies and thoughts go to individuals and families
Murrieta, Deputy Chief of the Rescue and Rescue Department, David Lantzen, was unable to disclose details of the severity of the others' injuries during a press conference.
According to Murrieta police, the roads in the area are closed and residents are kept away.
Murrieta is located about 70 miles north of San Diego.
