The bleeding radiation and powerful stellar winds (streams of subatomic particles) drive away dust in curtain-like leaves. When the monster star drops its birth cocoon, it suppresses star formation around it.

At the dark edges of this dynamic bubble-shaped ecosystem, however, stars form in dense clouds of gas and dust. Dark, elephant-like "trunks" of material are dense pieces of cocoons that are resistant to erosion by the glowing ultraviolet light and serve as incubators for young stars.

A young monster star that is 200,000 times brighter than our sun, powerfully radiates ultraviolet radiation and gale-force star winds that create a fantasy landscape of ridges, cavities, and mountains of gas and dust.

The star-shaped image on the right, taken by Hubble in the near-infrared light, reveals a very different view of the lagoon nebula than its visible light portrait. Infrared observations of the cosmos allow astronomers to penetrate huge clouds of gas and dust to reveal hidden gems. Hubble's view provides a sneak preview of the dramatic views that the NASA Space Telescope James Webb will provide.

The most obvious difference between Hubble's infrared and visible photos of this region is the abundance of stars filling the infrared field of view. Most of them are more distant, background stars are behind the nebula itself. However, some of these pinpricks are young stars in the lagoon nebula. The Giant Star Herschel 36, near the center of the picture, shines even brighter in this infrared view

Dark spots, known as Bok Globuli, mark the thickest parts of the nebula where dust protects stationary stars and their planets. While Hubble can not penetrate these dusty lumps, Webb will be able to see through them.

The Lagoon Nebula is 4000 light-years away. The picture shows a region of the nebula measuring about 4 light-years.

The observations were taken by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 between February 12 and February 18, 2018.
