The New England Patriots defense could be even better than last year's Super Bowl

Jamie Collins, an old friend, returns to the Patriots this year to add another playmaker to the Super Bowl defense. While many people wonder about the offense, especially about the integration of new receivers into the temporary play and how to replace Gronk and his irreplaceable production, I am more fascinated by what happens in defense. We hope the days of the bend do not break, are a distant memory.

This defense screams for aggression and I say, "Dogs are going!" in Miami. I really enjoyed the aggressive stamp on defense after watching Matt Patrick's more conservative approach for years. That and I hate Miami, but that's neither here nor there, Flores said simply. From the preseason of 201

8 he showed a lot of different looks, new lightning packages and had a fearless approach to follow the passers from different levels of defense. It was a more error prone approach, but this defense has not made many mistakes. He trusted his veterans and put his players in positions to play games. With Patricia it was more of a scuffing game. Do the right thing. Be in the right position. Do what Bill Belichick says. Wash, rinse, repeat and the opponent will make a mistake. It has been largely successful, but I liked the Flores approach better, and the team also won everything. I could add more impressive …

The thing is, neither Patricia nor Flores had the depth of the playmakers who seem to have this defense at every level. I think we may be able to see the best of Belichick's defensive tricks when he has a wealth of talent to become more creative. This Patriots run over the past 18 years has certainly been unbelievable, but for my part I long to see some of that defensive dominance that was the hallmark of the first participants in the Patriots dynasty. With many of these patriotic teams in recent years, defense has been on the rise, but this year it seems to be a complete reversal of that trend. 2019 projects that look like the teams from 2001 to 2004 who started it all. Defense could be the key to their success as the offensive slowly ceases. I think Belichick liked what he saw in Super Bowl LIII and I guess we see more of it.

It's really a classic Belichick. While everyone looks in one direction, he looks the other way and voila! A dominant defense appears. By strengthening the quarterback position within the division, the Patriots provide for a revived defense. Now there is an infusion of youth, speed, and skill that will increase as evolving gun opponents Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and newcomer Josh Rosen become their own. It is a classic Belichick and not to forget, the Patriots also have a lot of insults. Tom Brady will get his and they will fix the ball, but if they open the floodgates, I think the Patriots defense will win games for this team all year round.

Let's break it back to front.

The Secondary : Love AFC crimes, good luck. This device has everything. All-Pro-Corner Retired Stephon Gilmore is your anchor and heads the corner-balls. He is flanked by experienced smarts in Jason McCourty and two younger players in Jonathan Jones and J.C. Jackson. The decision for the second round last year, Duke Dawson, reinforces the youth and the upward trend, and another decision for the second round in this year's draft, Joejuan Williams, offers all the measurable draftniks that have it all. He is tall, fast and brave. The times in secondary Patriots are good and I have not even mentioned the certainties that are reliable and experienced for a man and have a championship pedigree. Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung and Duron Harmon are reliable players and leaders in the field. Put simply, the patriots have invested well in their secondary education and it is now the foundation of their defense that will be the source of everything else. This could be the best patriot since the Chuck Fairbanks teams of the late 70s. It may be so good.

Linebacker: For years, people have been screaming for more playmakers on this position, and I'm in this camp. Tedy Bruschi once had his nose for the ball, and Mike Vrabel combined good timing with talent to reach the quarterback. More recently Dont'a Hightower has been a beast when it comes to health and he's always on the biggest stage, but help has been needed here for some time.

Kyle Van Noy made a level jump last year and made some important additions. All of a sudden there are playmakers in the middle of the game. Hightower, Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Ja'Whaun Bentley from 2018 look like a potentially impressive group at the top of this linebacking core. There's also a lot of depth beyond that with people like Elandon Roberts and Christian Sam, whom we know. This device could be fun to watch. Belichick loves his linebackers and now he has a whole bunch to choose from and a game plan.

Defensive Line : This unit is more solid than spectacular and that's fine. They have all day time to start the coverage they should get in the background and there is enough talent to be creative on both levels. But that's not all. This unit also has talent and game abilities. A healthy Derek Rivers shows promise as bottom lag and the wind of popularity seems to be fully behind the rookie draft pick Chase Winovich the third round. His band looks exciting and adds an element of speed that can cause many problems. Guys like Deatrich Wise, Lawrence Guy, John Simon, Adam Butler, and Keionta Davis all contributed to this last season, and newcomer Michael Bennett brings his own attitude and a damn good CV.

Those are my expectations a bit higher than the old saying "do not break bend". I think a tired phrase needs a refresher so it does not bend or break. They have seen the new template for success in Super LIII and now their defense should be better. There is a lot of talent here.
