A new twist on Nvidia Shield has surfaced in the Google Play Developer Console. The new hardware, in contrast to "darcy" of the current model, the hardware code name "mdarcy" and runs on Android 9 Pie.

There are a few differences between the two hardware lists, but the most important one is the support of the Android 9 SDK for the new version, suggesting that it will be launched with Android 9 Pie. The new "mdarcy" listing lists the same Tegra X1 T210 SoC as the current Shield TV, but that does not necessarily mean the hardware stays the same. This could only be a placeholder.

Difference between Darcy (red) and Mdarcy (green), white is shared.

There is also a new hotword system feature for the mdarcy hardware. It's a little speculative, as the documentation for this feature is sparse, but this may indicate that the Smartspeaker-like Hotword Detection Wizard functionality integrates beyond the current voice input on the Shield remote can be. Support for customizable memory has also been discontinued.

A few months ago, XDA discovered two new remote hardware code names from Nvidia: "stormcaster" is a new shield controller and "friday" is a new shield remote. This hardware could also debut with this new Shield television.

This new model seems to be a little refresher, as the barely changed hardware codename "mdarcy" suggests. It is speculative, but this update could also go hand in hand with a general update to the product line on Android 9 Pie – Nvidia's 2015 Shield TV is one of the most durable devices Android has ever run on, and the company has even further updated it as the slimmer 2017 Model replaces it. As mentioned earlier, some of the details in the Play Console list may also contain wildcards, and there may be other changes and newer features for this new hardware.
