After weeks of battle on the greens, Woods split with his blade putter, the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS, he won 13 of his 14 major championships, and started with a mallet putter, the TaylorMade TP Ardmore 3.
Woods only needed 26 Putts on Friday during his round of 5 under par.
"If you have a relationship with a putter, have a good relationship with a particular putter, and then always tend to resume them," Clay Long, 66, told them USA TODAY Sports. "I mean, someday he'll get the (Scotty Cameron) putter and go," Boy, that looks good. Wow, man, I did not realize how good that looks when he starts doing better or gaining a bit more confidence.
"Ninety-nine percent of the time it has nothing to do with the putter itself, it's the person who deviates a bit from how they look at things."
The blade is a traditional putter with a straight club head. The mallet has a square blade like a blade, but is a larger racket with sometimes elaborate designs.
Few people know Putter as much as Long, who designed the oversized MacGregor Response putter that Jack Nicklaus has just used months before winning the 1986 Masters – the last of Nicklaus' 18 major championships.

Long, who served as TaylorMade's Director of Putter Product Creation before leaving the company in September, said he designed the Admore line. But Lon said club designer Kia Ma modified the Ardmore 2 in the Ardmore 3, a shortened version of the twin-tailed putter.
Although Long said he never met Woods, he met enough golfers to know what made Woods change Putter.
"On tour, for a good player or any player, I suppose when you bet, you sometimes get scared," said Long. "You look at the same putter with the same visual sequence and look, and then at some point when it just does not look right on the floor behind the ball, you can not tell where it's lined up."
"Well Often, you'll switch to another style putter or putter with a different line of sight just to give you something to look at. And sometimes that kind of alignment or whatever that's wrong with your putting, and sometimes you go back to your old putter once you're confident and your stroke arrives where you hit online. That said, the mallet putter have gained popularity on the PGA Tour with people like Jason Day and Dustin Johnson winning their blade-putters.Woods used a Scotty Cameron putter for all of his 14 major championships, despite having one other Model, the Newport Teryllium TeI3, who won the 1997 Masters.
Woods now in the majority, Long said in more than half The players on the PGA Tour use Mallet Putter – a trend that Long partly on Day & # 39 ; s putting success.
The hammer is far less radical than the MacGregor Response Long designed for Nicklaus, who worriedly gave up his blade putter – the model of the George Low Sportsman Wizard 600 – for the mammoth creation The Long.
Nicklaus used over-sized putter for over a decade and now uses a smaller putter that Long designed, saying he was "thrilled." Woods and Nicklaus use Put he's co-developed, but he sounds like a member of the oversized putter family.
"Because it's good physics, really good physics," he said. "If you want stability, that's the way to go."
