The NFL’s Washington Redskins will announce the change in the team’s nickname on Monday

Although the team is expected to announce the name change, the new name will not be released until later due to branding issues, according to Sports Business Daily. Head coach Ron Rivera told the Washington Post in an interview that he was working with team owner Daniel Snyder on a name that would honor both the military and Native Americans.

After weeks of protests against racism and as the country continues to face more direct oppression systems in recent weeks, the Washington Redskins could be the first team to announce a name change. Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians have also pledged to verify their names. The team̵

On July 3, the Washington Redskins announced that a “thorough review” of the team’s nickname would be carried out. The name has long been denounced by Indian groups as an ethnic arch.

“Given recent events in our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins have announced that the team will go through a thorough review of its name,” the team said in a statement. “This review formalizes the first discussions the team has had with the league in the past few weeks.”

The decision to recheck the name was also under increasing pressure from several corporate sponsors, including FedEx, who own the team’s stadium rights.

Other brands, including Nike and Amazon, have removed the team’s merchandise from their online stores.
