Being angry at an awards ceremony must be one of the more meaningless and harmful aspects of the human condition, but there were two specific moments when I allowed myself to get a little angry at the Oscars, at least a little ] The first time was 201
That was just the jab. The knockout hit came in 2016 when the Academy celebrated Oscar bait in all its forms and became Best Director forfor Best Picture and George Miller. In hindsight, it really was one of those "What the hell do you expect moments?" Of course, a movie like Mad Max: Fury Road would be overlooked for a dreary festival like The Revenant. Of course, Best Picture would go to an "issue" movie like Spotlight.
But I was hoping to change thinking. Personal taste is a personal taste, but Mad Max: Fury Road was clearly the best and most important film to be shot this year: a brain-lusting, pitch-laden allegory of misguided male power structures disguised as a two-hour blast series. However, it was ignored because it did not fit in the form of an Oscar winning film .
This year, the Academy had a chance to undermine these perceptions, which was not the case. The action movie was called Best Picture. It made everything safe and made the wrong decision.
And then it got worse.
In August of last year, it became known that the Academyan award that would have strengthened the mindset of "High Art Low Art" emanating from Black and white TV. It was the perfect example of an academy without contact, which .
Fortunately, this plan was not implemented.
Fast forward to 2019 and this year's Oscar nominations are eliminated. The big surprise: you are mostly OK? Do not get me wrong, they are not perfect.is not good despite a decent performance by Rami Malek. I am disappointed that was one of the most interesting horror movies of the decade, completely ignored – in particular Toni Collette, whose performance wore the film.
But look at the list! The most subversive comic film to date, filmed by Marvel Studios, received a nomination. The crowd that liked A Star Is Born was fine, too. A truly courageous academy would have put but small steps, people, small steps. If this ridiculous "popular movie" category got the green light, none of these films would have been awarded. All these advances would have been ruined.
The 2019 nominations seem to be an awards show that is slowly evolving to give a more modern idea of what a "good movie" looks like. Imagine an alternative universe in which a movie like The Shining Best Picture could win, even though it is "just" a horror movie. A universe where Christopher Guest could find the best supporting actor for Spinal Tap. This is the universe I would like to live in.
And it feels like we get there . We'll see who wins the Oscar night, but Get Out was extremely good last year, despite the dreaded cross between horror and satire. This year, a comic film is nominated for Best Picture. There is work to be done but things change for the better.
