Deep beneath the surface, liquid iron floats around its core, causing the North Pole to move from Canada to Siberia. This has led global geomagnetism experts to make an urgent update to the World Magnetic Model, which will change where exactly the North Pole lies. The next update was not scheduled before 2020, but due to the sudden shift of the North Pole, researchers need to push it.
The exact position where the North Pole is needed for GPS around the world and is currently close to Nature exceeds "the acceptable (safe) limit for navigation errors".
Arnaud Chulliat, a geomagnetist at the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): "The error is constantly increasing."

Although there is no sound explanation for why this happens, scientists believe it could be due to a massive stretch of liquid iron moving around the planet's interior.
Nature reports: "The fast movement of the Northern Magnetic Pole could be linked to a high-speed jet of liquid iron under Canada."
Phil Livermore of the University of Leeds told a meeting of the American Geophysical Union: "The location of the Northern Magnetic Pole seems to be determined by two large magnetic fields, one under Canada and one under Siberia.

The shift could also be due to a possible pole reversal, in which north turns to the south and vice versa.
In recent years, scientists have prepared for possible reversal in the magnetic field – a natural event every 200,000 to 300,000 years the north and south poles change.
