The outbreak of measles triggers a change in legislation to change vaccine exemptions

Health officials say they now have 35 measles cases in the Clark County outbreak and are treating 11 more suspected cases of infection.

Officials say 31 of the infected have not been immunized, while four others have not been confirmed had the vaccine.

Washington State legislators introduced a bill on Friday to remove personal exceptions to the measles vaccine.

State Secretary Paul Harris (R-Vancouver) sponsors the bill, saying that the bill will be exempted from personal exemption. However, religious and health exemptions remain.

The date for hearing the bill has not yet been determined.

Most confirmed cases are children under the age of 1

0, but in nine cases are children aged 11 to 18 and one case is for a person over the age of 19.

Those who were infected visited several public places while they were contagious. Officials say one of the youngest people has confirmed that the infection has visited the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and several businesses, such as Walmart and Trader Joe's in Vancouver. (full list of sites and exposure times below)

Measles symptoms start with a mild fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash.

"Measles can be so contagious that you can use it in a room, and if you are prone, two hours after someone has gone through with measles, and still get the disease," Dr. Alan Melnick, director of public health for Clark County.

If you or your child show signs of measles: Call your doctor before you enter so they can minimize the release of people in the waiting room.

Multnomah, Clackamas, Cowlitz, Klickitat and Washington have no cases.

"Most people are immunized, but measles also has a way to find people who are not, it's the most contagious human disease we know of," Dr. Paul Lewis with Multnomah County Health.

Dr. Lewis says if you have a child under the age of 1 you are worried about, you can talk to your doctor to get the vaccine early. You should also ask at every daycare center if your child is up to date on vaccinations.
