33-year-old Pierre Cleveland was also charged with involuntary manslaughter and the death of a dangerous animal, according to Wayne County Procuratorate.
Emma Hernandez Accused She rode her bicycle near her home in southwest Detroit when she was attacked by three loose pit bulls. She was hospitalized but died as a result of the injuries.
The victim's neighbor, Cleveland, is said to have left behind in his backyard "the dogs he knew were dangerous, easy and unsecured," while going on a business trip, the Wayne County attorney's office said in a press release on Thursday.
"It's terrible to imagine what Emma went through when she was beaten to death by malicious dogs allegedly belonging to the defendant," prosecutor Kym Worthy said. "It's high time that the city of Detroit throws light on the owners of these dangerous animals, who sometimes wander about and cause serious devastation – nothing worse than what happened here."
Investigators found that the yard's fence was "damaged and unsecured" and had a side door to the garage that led to the alley where the attack took place.
Cleveland has not yet appointed a lawyer, said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor.
Witnesses tried to fend off the dogs. One of them threw stones at them and another shot at them, police said in Detroit.
Cleveland is being held for a $ 2 million bond, prosecutors said. He was indicted on Thursday and is expected to stand trial on August 30 for a probable conference.
