The Pokémon World Championships are in progress and this makes it the perfect time for Nintendo and Game Freak to release some brand new information about Pokémon Sword and Shield, including a new trailer.
The new details refer to the game's updated and multi-layered combat system, which will include some new attacks and abilities as well as some new items.
New abilities include Galarian Weezing's Neutralizing Gas, which, as the name implies, neutralizes the abilities of all other Pokémon on the battlefield (including your teammate's abilities, as the trailer shows when Rotom's levitate fails). We're not sure what happens when two Galarian Weezings battle each other and we're even less sure we want to find out.
Similarly, Corviknight has a hidden ability called a mirror armor that allows him to play all of his opponent's statistic-lowering effects.
Hidden abilities, as confirmed in a blog post, are a bit more special than standard abilities, as they are only included in Pokémon captured in Max Raid Battles (so a Corviknight caught in a normal encounter does not exist) Ability of mirror armor).
These Max Raid Battles happen to be the way to meet another kind of special Pokémon: one that is gigantamaxing-capable. If you're really lucky, you can take a Pokémon into a Max Raid battle that has Gigantamax and a hidden ability, but that's a very rare event you have to take part in many raids.
The first new item uncovered in the trailer is Room Service, which reduces the speed of the Pokémon holding it throughout the Trick Room. The other is Eject Pack, which eliminates the held Pokémon from combat when its stats are lowered, so you can replace it with another from your team.
New moves are always exciting and the trailer unveils a named Breaking Swipe, an attack capable of hitting two Pokémon simultaneously and reducing their attacks.
The biggest (and thus literally) detail of the trailer concerns the new Dynamaxing mechanics.
You can dynamize any Galar region Pokémon as long as you have the Dynamax Band (which is different from the Gigantamaxing mentioned above, which can only be a few Pokémon types). Even better, their powerful Max moves have secondary effects that could give your team an edge in combat. For example, Max Geyser is a water-type Max-Move that brings rain into play, strengthens water-type moves, and mitigates fire-type moves.
Finally, a few more details about the Online Battle Stadium have been confirmed. Players with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription can connect via the Internet and participate in single or double battles. These fights can be high-level or occasional, with the former being to face coaches of similar rank, trying to score points to ascend, while the latter are just for fun.
Pokémon Sword and Shield will be released on Nintendo Switch on November 1
