Rivera's partially beheaded corpse was found early Saturday after another woman in the apartment reported an Uber in the street and the driver called the police, one police officer said.
An ax salvaged from a garbage press in the public housing complex in the Bushwick area is part of the investigation, the official said. It is not clear if the ax was used in the crime.
When officers arrived at the 8th floor apartment, Rivera was unconscious and did not respond in the living room where she was pronounced a dad. She had several puncture wounds and cuts on the head, arms and body. She had also severed her fingers, police said.

The woman, who also had head and body tears, was present In a critical but stable state of Elmhurst Hospital late Saturday, the police said.
The two women were either policemen or relatives.
The child was taken to a local hospital for examination and observation, the police said. Residents came and went under light rain when yellow police tape secured the building's entrance.
Forensic officers carried alleged evidence in police vehicles.
No arrests were made.
