Sony announced in its second quarter earnings report that it had sold 2.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles between July and September. Since selling exactly 100 million copies three months ago, total revenue has come in at 102.8 million, which means the PS4 outdid the original PlayStation.
The PlayStation was, as you can remember, a tremendous success. It sold 102.5 million units, far more than competitors such as the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, and so far has been the second-best home console of all time behind the PS2, which probably sold unrepeatable 155 million. Also noteworthy is that the Nintendo Wii was also surpassed this quarter with a total of 1
It's a tremendous achievement for Sony to reach this level of popularity with the PS4, but this console cycle is clearly lagging behind. Sony's gaming revenues dropped 17 percent year-on-year and revenue fell 28 percent. This is no surprise as the company plans to release the PlayStation 5 next Christmas. However, Sony has lowered its forecast for sales of PS4 hardware for the fiscal year to 13.5 million units, a decline of 1.5 million.
The PS4 is not quite finished though. The most important exclusive games in the calendar include The Last of Us Part II Ghost of Tsushima and the much anticipated Death Stranding next week.
