LONDON (AP) – Queen Elizabeth II. Has seen this production before. Since taking office in 1952, the monarch already has 13 members of the government. This makes Boris Johnson the 14th Prime Minister of her previous reign. Here's a look at the British transfer of power
Following the applause of Downing Street staff, Theresa May drives 1.6 km to Buckingham Palace to resign and ask the monarch to tell his colleague, the Conservative Johnson, establishing a new government.
May enters the palace as leader of the nation. When she leaves the palace, she is only a legislator for her Maidenhead constituency and joins the 649 other legislators in the House of Commons.
May is one of Britain's shortest-serving prime ministers in the last 1
OUT WITH THE OLD, WITH THE NEW Let the light go on, Theresa.
Once May leaves to visit the Queen, she will not return to 10 Downing Street, a Georgian residence in London with approximately 100 rooms just minutes from Parliament. Johnson visits the queen shortly after May leaves Buckingham Palace. He then returns to number 10, where he is expected to deliver a speech in the afternoon. Announcements for at least some cabinet positions are expected after the speech into the night.
LARRY REMAINS IN POST
Government revolving door spun – Cabinet ministers resign, fired and appointed – key member of Downing Street team remains in action: Larry the Cat.
The 12-year-old tabby is the official head of government, Mouser of the Cabinet. Larry's Twitter feed proudly states that he is in office longer than the current chairman of a British party.
Larry's tenure began with former Prime Minister David Cameron, fed up with TV crews discovering mice on their doorstep. Cameron and his family tracked down Larry at a London shelter.
Downing Street's number 10 shiny black door provides the setting for Larry's daily catwalk, but since he appeared on the street, he has also been photographed in less glamorous poses. He is also known for catfights with Palmerston, the head mouser of the nearby Foreign Office.
Some government members just never understand each other.
