One of Germany's Richest Families Has a Worrying Past The family, which owns a majority stake in Krispy Kreme Donuts and Panera Bread, will donate $ 11 million to charity after learning that their ancestors convinced supporters of Adolf Hitler were and do forced labor on a large scale.

The family announced their planned charitable donation after the Bild newspaper published a report showing how Albert Reimann Sr. and Albert Reimann Jr. used Russian civilians and French prisoners of war as forced laborers during the Second World War. The family Reimann, whose assets are estimated at 33 billion euros, has not denied the results of the report of the newspaper. "It's all right," spokesman Peter Harf told the newspaper. "Reimann senior and Reimann junior were guilty … they were in jail."

The family had already dealt with the topic before the newspaper's report. Reimann Sr., deceased in 1954, and his late son, who died in 1984, never talked about the company's past, and the family seemed under the impression that they already knew about their Nazi relations. However, they suspected there might be more in the story, and in 2014 hired a historian to investigate the family history. The historian presented the conclusion a few weeks ago. "We are all ashamed and as white as the wall," said Harf, one of the two managing partners of JAB Holding Company. "There is nothing to gloss over. These crimes are disgusting. "The historian Paul Erker of the University of Munich writes a book about his findings.

Luxembourg-based JAB Holding Company holds shares in Keurig Green Mountain, Peets Coffee & Tea, Caribou Coffee and Pret a Manger, among others.
