The tallest statue in the world is ready for initiation in India: NPR

Deep in the west of India, a giant larger than any other in the world expects his immediate welcome in the world. The Statue of Unity, a 600-foot monument to a founding father of independent India, is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

Presumably, there is only enough time left to scroll down to the bottom of the following photograph

The statue depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who along with Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru has helped lead India to independence from the United Kingdom. Often known as the Iron Man of India, he served as the first interior minister of the independent country and deputy prime minister. He helped unite his hundreds of different states into a coherent, functioning structure before his death in 1950.

Now the later Indian leader not only enjoys a towering reputation, but also a literally towering monument in the region he welcomed from the western state of Gujarat. The unit's $ 400 million statue overlooks the Sardar Sarovar Dam near the city of Vadodara.

To give you a little scaling: It would take about four Statue of Liberty, each standing on the last one, for Lady Liberty Only Get the crown of the Iron Man's head with her torch.

And as for his toes – well, his big toe alone stands slightly higher than the construction worker who completes the statue.

The dwarf contest, the Spring Temple Buddha in Henan, China, is eclipsed. This copper giant stands on a 66 foot high pedestal, on which there is a monastery, 420 meters high.

The Henan Buddha will give up the title of the tallest statue in the world when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally inaugurates the Statue of Unity on Wednesday. Also from Gujarat, Modi plans to hold a special prayer in front of the statues of the statue and to deliver a solemn speech in front of the Luftwaffe fly-bys.

However, the colossus was not undisputed.

The leaders of the local tribes have announced a boycott of the inauguration ceremony, citing the destruction of nearby resources, according to Indian TV station NDTV.

"These forests, rivers, waterfalls, land and agriculture have supported us for generations and we have survived," they said in an open letter cited by the broadcaster. "But now everything is being destroyed and celebrations are planned, do not you think that it resembles a human's death? We feel that way."

They also claimed that the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on the statue could have been better spent elsewhere – even on the unreliable canal system nearby.

"This is done for political reasons, as tribal groups in Gujarat still suffer and have no basic human needs," said a local leader.

These objections have little dampened Modi's enthusiasm.

"Every Indian will be proud to have the tallest statue in the world in India, and Sardar Patel, the man associated with the land, will now adorn the sky," he said Sunday. "I'm sure every Indian will be proud to tell the world about this great achievement."

At a height of 600 feet, the homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the icon of independence, will be much higher than the next largest statue in the world, the Spring Temple Buddha in China.
