Alex Housden, KOCO anchor in Oklahoma City, apologized to co-anchor James Hackett in an emotional section after comparing him to a gorilla in a previous section.
During a section on a gorilla in the Oklahoma City Housden Zoo, Hackett, who is an African American, remarked, "Looks like you, somehow." Hackett replied, "Actually, it's true."
She was confronted by the community with backlashes calling the station "Yesterday I said something rash, it was inappropriate, and I hurt people," Housden said on the show. "And I want you to know that I understand how much I hurt you out there and how much I hurt you. I love our community and I want you to know all, from the bottom of my heart, that I apologize for what I said. I know it was wrong. "
Hackett accepted Housden's apology and said that he wanted people to know that they are still good friends talking on the set, noting that their remark" deeply struck "him and others. "I guess I want this to be an instructive moment, and this lesson here is that words are important. There is no doubt about that, "he said.
Hackett called for unity, but added people need to be aware of the harmful stereotypes that others are exposed to.
