A statement and photos of the US Air Forces Central Command said the stealth jets arrived on Thursday at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The Air Force did not state the total number of F-22 deployed, but a handout image showed at least five of the fighters above the base.
"These planes are being sent to Qatar for the first time to defend American forces and interests in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command," said the Air Force.
"The S-300 batteries would be the first target of The First Wave, thereby opening up the airspace for the subsequent attacks" by other less secret US aircraft, "Layton said.
In that sense "The presence of the F-22 is a strong deterrent against further escalation of tensions by Iran," said Layton Carl Schuster, former dispatcher at the Joint Intelligence Center of US Pacific Command.
"It means that (the US) is trying to something to stop, not something to initiate, "he said.
The twin-engine F-22 can be configured for air-to-air or air-to-ground missions.
In the previous mode, she is the best air superiority fighter in the US arsenal. In the latter mode, its speed and stealth abilities make it a world-class platform for precise air attacks on enemy targets.
"The combination of stealth, integrated avionics and supercruise dramatically reduces rocket attack envelopes and minimizes the enemy's ability to track down and intervene in the F-22," an air force fact sheet said.
