The US warship sails through the Taiwan Strait after Chinese officials canceled its port visit to Hong Kong

"The USS Green Bay (LPD 20) conducted a routine cross-strait transit on August 23 (local time) in accordance with international law." Cdr. Reann Mommsen, a spokesman for the US Navy's Seventh Fleet, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, CNN reported that the Chinese government had rejected requests for port visits by USS Green Bay and USS Lake Erie in Hong Kong.

The USS Green Bay, an amphibious transport dock ship, was due to visit Hong Kong on 17 August.

The canceled visit to the harbor was announced in the context of continuing protests in Hong Kong, which Beijing had accused Beijing of. The idea was denied by both the demonstrators and the US government.

"Cruise through the Taiwan Strait shows the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, and the US Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law permits." Mommsen said.

The US routinely sails through the crosswalk, most recently in July, but the Chinese forces consider the strategic waterway separating China from Taiwan as a priority area and often shade US ships passing through the area.

Friday's transit takes place in the midst of intensified trade tensions instead of Washington and Beijing.

China announced a new round of retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth about $ 75 billion on Friday.
The Trump government recently also approved a major arms sale to Taiwan, a move that Beijing vehemently protested that regards the Democratic Self-Government Island as a renegade province.
