"The USS Green Bay (LPD 20) conducted a routine cross-strait transit on August 23 (local time) in accordance with international law." Cdr. Reann Mommsen, a spokesman for the US Navy's Seventh Fleet, said in a statement.
Earlier this month, CNN reported that the Chinese government had rejected requests for port visits by USS Green Bay and USS Lake Erie in Hong Kong.
The canceled visit to the harbor was announced in the context of continuing protests in Hong Kong, which Beijing had accused Beijing of. The idea was denied by both the demonstrators and the US government.
"Cruise through the Taiwan Strait shows the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, and the US Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law permits." Mommsen said.
