The world looks at the total lunar eclipse, the longest of this century

Curiosity and awe have greeted a complete lunar eclipse, the longest of the century and visible in many parts of the world.

The so-called "Bloodmoon", when it turned deep red, was seen at various times in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America as the sun, earth, and moon perfectly aligned and the Earth's shadow lit the moon.

The total darkness lasted 1

hour and 43 minutes, with the whole event closer to four hours.

The viewers of Rio de Janeiro cheered as the Blood Moon emerged from the fog. Hundreds of people watched a fort overlooking the famous Copacabana beach and Sugar Loaf. The local planetarium set up telescopes for astrology fans.

"These telescopes are fantastic, it's one thing to see pictures of the planets in one book and another to see them in real life," said Ana Selma Ferreira, age 46 An old lawyer who is taking her children to the spectacle brought.

Throughout Africa, people turned to the sky and watched as the reddish shadow slid across the lunar surface. In Somalia, some rushed to mosques for special prayers. In southern Sudan, some people dared to take photos in a war-torn country where public use of a camera is not desired.

In the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, people admired a rare clear view in an outdoor restaurant during the rainy season and compared a live NASA webcast with what they saw above. Then clouds came in.

"To the yelebesech chereka" murmured some – Amharic for "Bloodmoon".

"The reason for the moon turning red is that the atmospheric light scatters red light through the atmosphere and composition. The atmosphere can change when volcanic eruptions or forest fires occur," said Tom Kerss, astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

"And the density of dust that increases in the atmosphere can make the moon look particularly dark red, and indeed it has the same effect on our sunsets and sunrises."

In a special deal, Mars is also at Earth's Closest Approach this week since 2003, making it seem bigger and brighter.

Excited social media observers shared photos of the bright planet to the right of the moon.

North America missed the lunar eclipse on Friday but you can look forward to NASA's next on January 21, 2019.
