In Fortnite something strange is happening. Controllers randomly rumble when nothing happens. There is something in the sky that was not there before. Nobody knows what that means.
If you look into Fortnites Skybox now, you might notice a shiny ball with a celestial tail. It looks like a comet. The object does not seem to be part of the storm or anything like that – in fact, there does seem to be specialized animations, as if moving across the sky. The strange thing is, the players say the comet seems to get bigger. I was playing yesterday, and the comet looked like this:
Smaller, more distant, not quite as bright. The picture from the top of the post was taken this morning. It seems that Epic slowly but surely makes this object visible in the sky. But why? What does it mean?
When Kotaku contacted the developer, one representative responded with a single image:
Okay, then. 1965
Players might as well be the conspiracy theory type. Without Epic's direction, players go to Reddit to construct theories about the meaning of the comet. Will the comet hit the map? What happens when it happens – will it come with an event? Goodies? Will the comet destroy the card or change somehow? (I'm skeptical of this last idea – Epic has just added a lot of new areas to the island, would they really get rid of everything for a new map?)
Earlier this month, a redditor submitted a map idea where Tilted Towers crashed into a crater is transformed, and some people think that this could be just what is happening. The idea is that tilted towers are destroyed and flattened. While Epic was having fun with Redditors and incorporating their ideas into the game, it seems unlikely that targeted Tilted Towers will be targeted. Its not long ago. But who knows?
While the timing gives the impression that it's a potential April Fool's joke, the comet material seems to be much longer than this particular weekend. Actually, the entire Battle Pass season seems to be a space issue, and we still have weeks to go before it's over. One of the Battle Pass Rewards this season is an Astronaut Costume. Smart players have also noticed that other unlockable items contain stickers of eggs, dinosaurs and an explosion. It's as if Epic is referring to the extinction of dinosaurs, something triggered by an asteroid. Will something big happen at the end of the current Fortnite season?
Another leading theory is that this is all in preparation for Epic announcing that Save the World, the PVE portion of Fortnite will be released. While I'm not sure there's enough evidence to support this, it's certainly a move that would make sense: it's amazing that someone would pay for this part in the game in the first place.
If you're playing on the console, you may also have noticed that your controller is always offering rumble feedback. It seems to be a mistake:
Even with this information, in everything else that happens to the comet, players are still trying to figure out what it means. " One player has decided where the rumble is going, and another has been trying to turn the rumble into Morse code, until the problem is resolved, we'll probably get more theories about the rumble, and whether it joins the other mystery, or not.
Even after seeing all the evidence float around, I have no idea what it's going to happen, but I love that Fortnite can be so funny.
