This preseason statistic could have eliminated just eleven teams from winning the Super Bowl

Usually, if your favorite NFL team has a bad preseason, it does not really mean much, but it could mean something this year, because an interesting pattern has developed between the preseason game and winning the Super Bowl.

So, what is the pattern?

In the past 10 years, no Super Bowl champion has ended the preseason with a lossy record. Here is a list of all Super Bowl champions for the last 1

0 years and a look at their last record during the preseason.

If this pattern stops in 2018, we can eliminate the dolphins, jets, titans, Redskins, Eagles, Cowboys, Bears, Lions, Falcons, 49ers, and Seahawks from the Super Bowl fight because they are all ready for the preseason with a lossy one Record.

On the other hand, this 10-year pattern could be a total coincidence and mean absolutely nothing. However, if you're looking for a reason why Super Bowl winners did well in preseason, it's likely to have something to do with their coaching staff. If a staff is good at finding talent, then the lower end of its 90-member squad will be better than its opponents, which is a big deal because the players at the bottom of the squad are usually the ones playing in the second Half of a preseason game.

Of course, this logic does not apply to any team, because no matter how many preseason games the Browns win, that never seems to translate into the regular season. The Browns went 4-0 in the preseason last season before beating them in the regular season 0-16.

Another notable preseason will likely have quite upset fans in Baltimore. The Ravens have scored in the preseason a 5-0 record, which is actually quite rare. Since 1980, only six other teams have completed an NFL preseason with a 5-0 record, and these teams were largely successful.

Here's a list of those teams with their last record and where their season ended: [1] Giants (10-6): Lost Divisional Round
1991 49ers (10-6): Missed playoffs.
1992 49ers (14-2): Lost in the NFC championship.
1992 Jets (4-12): Missed playoffs.
1997 Packers (13-3): Lost Super Bowl
1997 Steelers (11-5): Lost in the AFC Championship

Even if you include the ugly season of the Jets in 1992, that's still one Average of 10.3 wins per season for each team since 1980, which went in the preseason 5-0. That seems to be good news for the ravens.

Lastly, we'll conclude with a statement for the preseason unearthed by one of Reddit's editors: Any team that plays four or more preseason games and scores less than 44 total points over these games will likely have postseason Success. Since 1983, 33 teams have met this bill and none of these 33 teams has won a playoff game. This is bad news for the Cowboys (43), Titans (40) and Falcons (27), who all failed to reach the mark of 44 points in the preseason this year.

How does the preseason play a role? It looks like we'll have to look in February to see if these statistics really do last.
