Remember if a super rare sticker is a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. sold on NES last February for $ 100,150? Well, another copy of the exact same game (in a similar condition) broke that record for $ 114,000 (roughly £ 90,000). That makes this special copy of the most expensive video game ever sold.
Why exactly did this US retail version bring more, you ask? Apart from its sealed condition and 9.4 out of 10 points, all of this has to do with the cardboard hangtabs. Heritage Auctions explains the attractiveness and history of these variants under the listing:
What’s up with cardboard hangtabs? one can understandably ask oneself.
Cardboard hangtabs were originally used in the U.S. test market for copies of black box games before plastic was used to seal each game. When Nintendo began to further establish its company in the United States, the packaging was updated almost continuously. Oddly enough, the plastic wrap was added before changing the box cutting shape to remove the cardboard hang tab. This made the functionality of the cardboard hangtab completely unusable as it was under the plastic seal.
There are four sub-variants of the cardboard plastic sealed hangtab box (this special copy of Super Mario Bros. is the “3 Code”; variant) that were made within a year. Each sub-variant of the cardboard hangtab black box produced within this period had a production period of only a few months; A drop in the bucket compared to the entire production run of the title.
In short, a cardboard hangtab copy of an early Nintendo Entertainment System game gives its successors a hint of “vintage” that is second to none.
Part of the interest is also the fact that it is a copy of Super Mario Bros. – a legendary game from 1985 that has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and happens to be the best-selling NES game ever. The winner of this last auction wants to remain anonymous – fingers crossed, it goes to a collector’s home.
If you want to revisit the original version of Super Mario Bros. but don’t feel like releasing 100,000 or having access to an original copy of the game, the good news is that it’s playable on Nintendo’s Switch Online subscription service.
