Thousands and Trump at the rally in Texas for India's leaders

HOUSTON, September 22 (Reuters). Around 50,000 Indians and Americans will be attending a rally in Houston on Sunday together with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in a rare mass event of support for a stadium to invite a foreign leader on US soil.

The event offers Modi, a nationalist who faces international criticism for a recent crackdown on controversial Kashmir, the opportunity to strengthen his relationship with Indo-Americans who are active political supporters. Meanwhile, Trump will face a largely foreign-born audience that may not be receptive to his typical stern messages against immigrants.

Houston is a rare democratic stronghold in Republican-dominated Texas and serves as the economic anchor of a state that will be critical to Trump's re-election bid for 2020. Polls show that Indian-American voters are lukewarm, 75% of whom voted in favor of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in 2016.

But organizers of "Howdy, Modi!" "Trump is very much welcomed by the community," said Preeti Dawra, a spokeswoman for the Texas India Forum that organized the event. "His presence is an indication that he supports and supports the strengthening of India's relations with America, and this event is about strengthening these relationships."

It will not be the first time that Modi leads the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya-Janata party. According to an analysis by the Pew Research Center on US census data, the company has turned to a large crowd in the United States, home to some 4 million Indians, including some 300,000 in Houston and near Dallas, in New York City in the United States 2014, and Indian-American volunteers living in US suburbs helped launch a telephone flash of voters in India ahead of its May re-election campaign.

American Diaspora for him, "said Dawra," We will show him on Sunday the enthusiasm that the Diaspora has for his leadership. "

KASHMIR CRACKDOWN

Modi's visit to Houston goes to this week's General Assembly The Indian head of state continued to burden the long-smoldering relations with Pakistan last month by revoking the partial autonomy enjoyed by the Muslim majority in Kashmir and the two Modi's step has been taken up by international criticism.

Pakistan has condemned this and its PM Imran Khan warned it would drive more Muslims into extremism.

Members of the Sikh religious minority and Muslim groups in India are planning noise meetings near the stadium to face Modis Kashmir-Pol to protest.

US-India relations on trade and tariffs are currently difficult, though Trump and Modi seem to have strong personal ties.

But Devesh Kapur, director of Asia Programs at Johns Hopkins University, which has written a book about American Indians, said the rally would have symbolic value for both leaders, "but it's unlikely that it affects sensitive trade issues … but it can not hurt. " 19659002] Kapur also predicted a slight improvement in Trump's reputation among Indians.

"The strict immigration policy of the Trump government … has received little support from the community," said Kapur sai d. "The appearance with PM Modi could support the democratic basic attitude of the community mildly, but in no way reverse."
