Three children were injured when police in Oklahoma opened fire on a robbery suspect on Friday night. The suspect was also shot in the incident.
21-year-old William Devaughn Smith was in Hugo, near the border between Texas and Oklahoma, where the police attempted to detain the man, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Smith is suspected of robbing a pizza hut in Hugo on April 11th.
While attempting to "make contact" with Smith, police officers opened fire and shot him and three children, the OSBI said in a statement. Smith and four children were in a vehicle when investigators from the Hugo Police Department opened the fire, Brook Labor, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau, told the Associated Press. 21
Three of the four children were shot, the police said. They were hospitalized, but the information on injuries and age was not published by the authorities.
Smith, also shot, was hospitalized, treated, and released into custody of the Paris Police Department. Paris is just across the border from Hugo.
At this time the suspect is arrested for robbery from the beginning of this month. It is unclear whether additional fees will be charged.
The robbery is said to have entered the back door of the pizza shop and squeezed an item against an employee's back before he got away with an unknown amount of money, police said.
