Three Sailors Aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier committed suicide last week.
None of the incidents involved, and none of them occurred on the ship docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, the navy said Monday.
] The three sailors were identified as Chief Electronics Technician Nuclear James Shelton, Airman Ethan Stuart, and Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Vincent Forline.
said Jennifer Cragg, a spokeswoman for Norfolk Naval Station. "Our thoughts and condolences are to the families, friends and shipmates of the sailors."
A Facebook Group Contribution to the USS George H.W. Bush said death represents the third, fourth and fifth suicide of crew members in the last two years.
"My heart is broken," wrote Captain Sean Bailey, commanding officer of the ship.
"Now is the time to get together as a crew and as a family to grieve, support each other, and care for the needy," Bailey said. "We need All Hands to get involved by putting forward your suggestions and ideas on how we can work together to prevent further suicide and repeat that there is never any stigma or impact when asking for help . "
The USS George HW Bush joined the fleet in 2009 and is named after the former president, who was a World War II naval aviator.
