HOUSTON – A Guatemalan official says two and a half years old – old immigrant child died after crossing the border, making him the fourth child of whom known that it died after being arrested by the Border Patrol since December.
Tekandi Paniagua, Consul for Guatemala in Del Rio, Texas, said the boy died on Wednesday At the beginning of April, he and his parents arrived in the US in El Paso, Texas. Paniagua said the boy had a high fever and respiratory problems and the authorities took him to a children's hospital where pneumonia was diagnosed.
The boy stayed in the hospital for about a month before dying on Tuesday. The Washington Post reported for the first time on his death.
US. Customs and Border Guard did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
The advocates have long questioned the ability of the border police to care for the thousands of parents and children in their care. The agency says it is overwhelmed by the flood of migrant families crossing the US-Mexico border.
