It seems everyone on the internet has an opinion about the Toyota Supra 2020, and with good reason. It is a famous name tag that is loved by driving enthusiasts around the world. For such a coveted sports car to return from the US market after a long break, many passionate chair comments fly around.
Let's offset this with hard numbers to see how the Supra teams up with colleagues from its BMW Z4 platform colleague and how it compares to the Chevrolet Corvette, the Ford Mustang GT (optionally with Performance Package Level II) , and the Nissan 370Z Nismo.
Engine and Transmission
Since the introduction of the Supra nameplate in 1
To make injuries even worse – especially for fans of manual transmissions – the Supra is initially offered only with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The same applies to the Z4. There are rumors of a possible three-pedal setup, but right now that's all – rumors.
In contrast, you can only get the Performance Package Level II Mustang with a six-manual. The Chevrolet Corvette is one of the few production cars in the world to offer a seven-speed shifter. If you opt for the automatic, but you get an extra gear. With the sophisticated Nismo 370Z from Nissan you can also choose between a manual or an automatic, but with a conventional six-speed unit, if you want to row yourself, and seven speeds with its automatic.
The Supra sets solid performance figures, but the automaker's official estimates are one of the slower cars in this group. The BMW Z4 beats the Supra by 0.2 seconds to 60 miles per hour with its extra power and torque at the same weight. The fastest car here is the Chevrolet Corvette. Its stomping LT1 V8 is much more powerful and yet notable, it has about 100 pounds less to lug around.
With the Ford Mustang much larger (including a usable rear seat), it's much heavier than the other cars here. With sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, however, he makes amazing power and effectively puts them on the road. The Nissan has 15hp more than the Supra, but with a torque deficit of 89lbs, he would probably book the slowest 0-60 time when Nissan releases official 0-60s.
|Model||0-60 Accel (sec)||Maximum speed (mph)||Curb weight (lbs.)|
|Ford Mustang GT Performance Package Stage II||09.03||155||3,705|
|Nissan 370Z Nismo||4.7 (est.)||N / A||3457|
I think the Supra looks good overall, but I find it a bit over the top (blame for all these wrong slots). For my money, the fourth-generation Supra of the 1990s was simpler but more effective. In comparison, the 2020 Supra seems to be too hard. The Z4 has more flanks and a responsive rear area, but the front is almost too frowning.
I still do not have any good feelings for the rear wheel of the C7 Corvette, but it's good-looking everywhere. The muscle-car look of Mustang sets it apart among the more athletic-built sports car, yet looks its own through a careful blend of modern and retro style.
The 370Z Nismo is for me certainly the most unattractive car in this group. The boomerang headlights and taillights make me faint, but I'm bothering with the bottom feeder front end. Luckily, the nose of the Standard 370Z does not look offensive to me.
The interior of the Supra is not bad, but there is clearly a lot of BMW inside. My biggest problem is the steering wheel horn pad, which looks too big and simple. The interior of the Z4 is better executed, with contrasting highlights for a better look.
The Corvette has continued for years, but the rotating cockpit still looks good and remains refreshing. This is particularly impressive when you consider generations of Corvettes with laughable cheap indoor material.
The current Mustang of the S550 generation significantly improved its interior design in 2015. Its design is retro, but the update has helped it age even more elegantly.
The interior of the 370Z, on the other hand, looks as outdated as it actually is. I do not think the Nissan is a bad looking place, but the cab along with the rest of the car is long overdue for a redesign. It has been on the market since 2009.
Technology and Safety
The new Supra features limited cabin standard technology with a modest 6.5-inch display controlled by a version of the BMW iDrive rotary switch. The BMW Z4 is better equipped and has a 10.25-inch display, which is controlled via the iDrive button or by touching the screen. The Bimmer display is complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The Corvette is one of the older cars in the group, but there are no difficulties in the cabin technology department. Standard features include 4G LTE Wi-Fi and an 8-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In front of the driver also sits an 8-inch display. Satellite radio is also standard, while a Bosesurrounds the driver and front passenger.
If you choose Mustang's Performance Pack Level II specification, Ford requires a technical upgrade package. The result is an 8-inch Sync 3 touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a nine-speaker stereo satellite radio and a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display.
Because the Nismo is at the top The Z-Series gives you world-class features like embedded navigation on a 7-inch touch screen and a Bose 8-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and DVD-Video playback (what's the point of relapse? ).
The Supra excels with its standard driver assistance technology. It includes the automatic foot brake to detect collisions with pedestrians, the warning of leaving the lane and the detection of traffic signs. The Z4 is standard with the exception that traffic sign recognition is optional.
The Corvette and Nismo 370Z do not offer advanced driver assistance systems. The standard version of Performance Pack Level II fits the Mustang to Chevy and Nissan. However, the Mustang can be equipped with an automatic foot brake detection, an adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping assistant and a rain sensor.
Apart from the advanced driver assistance systems, the 2020 Toyota Supra offers no such thing. In this story of the band, it really stands out. Buyers will appreciate that it is equipped with some of the latest driver safety systems from the outset. For most buyers, however, security is not the top priority – it is the brute force of the performance number. If you calculate the performance figures of the Supra with the price, it does not seem to set a new standard among the available sports cars around this general price point.
If you want to be one of the first to own a Supra price point this summer, you will be higher. The first 1,500 will be Launch Edition cars based on the Supra's Top 3.0 Premium fairing and they will deliver $ 56,180 including target.
With the Mustang and the 370Z you can save thousands and create more impressive numbers at the same time. For just $ 815 more than the Launch Edition Supra, you get a basic Corvette Stingray that's lighter, more powerful, and equipped with more cabin technology. The Z4 M40i could throw a few thousand off its base price, but it could be a good choice for someone who is not impressed with the super exterior and / or interior, or necessarily with buyers who pay attention to badges. Price Compare
|Vehicle||Price (includes destination)|
|Toyota Supra||51,850 USD|
|BMW Z4 M40i||$ 65,690|
|Chevrolet Corvette Stingray||56,995 USD|
|Ford Mustang GT Performance Package Stage II||44,950 USD|
|Nissan 370Z Nismo||46,585 USD|
Against this background, it will really matter how the new Supra drives. Fortunately, the editor of the roadshow, Tim Stevensand in his brief experience with the car he was happy with it. However, it was an early model to quote his words: "More tests are needed."
Once we have some time behind the wheel of a Production Representative Supra, we have a better sense of whether his driving style can strengthen his relatively ordinary numbers.
